Spending time outdoors is instrumental in achieving our best health and wellbeing. Studies have found that twenty minutes in nature can make us happier, boost our immune system, and provide a daily dose of Vitamin D.

But that time can become detrimental without proper protection. It only takes 15 minutes for the sun's UV rays to cause sun damage.

UV protective clothing is the perfect solution. It makes a thoughtful gift for anyone in your life who is spending time outdoors or should be. There is UV protective clothing for just about every outdoor activity.

Read on and we'll tell you everything you need to know, plus how to order.

UV Light: Friend or Foe?

UV is shorthand for 'ultraviolet. Ultraviolet radiation is the radiation that shines down on us from the sun. Any exposure can put us at risk for skin cancers and premature aging.

Yet it can feel so good to soak up UV rays. Many times during outdoor activities we may forget about the exposure. But a sunburn or heat exhaustion afterward may serve as a painful reminder.

Still, there are so many pros. Participating in outdoor activities has been shown to make us happier, enhance creativity, and reduce pain (as long as we don't burn!).

With the Coronavirus still a real threat, more people are turning to nature for a respite from lock-down conditions. How can we balance the need for nature against the potential damage of exposure to UV radiation?

When enjoyed safely, and in moderation, UV light is certainly our friend. And UV protective clothing can help make that friendship last a lifetime.

What Is UV Protective Clothing?

All clothing provides some level of sun protection. This is called its UPF rating, or Ultraviolet Protection Factor. The higher the rating, the more protection.

Sun protective clothing can block up to 98 percent of the sun's UV rays. These specially designed clothes can look and feel like 'normal' clothes. There are key differences though.

UV protective clothing will often have a tighter weave, making it more difficult for UV rays to penetrate. They are also usually made from fast-drying fabrics such as lycra, nylon, or polyester.

Because the clothing is going to be worn during activities, it also tends to be more durable. You may also see UV clothing made out of canvas or denim in some cases.

Because of this, you may pay a little more. But it's an investment that will last.

What is the difference between UVA and UVB rays?

UVA radiation makes up 95% of the all the UV rays that make it to the Earth’s surface. UVA penetrates deep into our skin and can even pass through glass.

UVA damages your skin, resulting in a tan. It is the primary radiation used in tanning beds. It causes almost all forms of skin aging, including wrinkles. UVA damages the collagen and elastin in the skin and also generates free radicals.

UVB radiation makes up only 5% of the UV rays from the sun, but it is very high energy.

UVB damages skin cells and causes DNA mutations that can eventually lead to melanoma and other types of skin cancer.

UVB radiation from the sun also can cause cataracts.

Designed For Activity

Outdoor enthusiasts know that good gear needs to withstand not only the elements but wear and tear too. They also know that different activities require different attire.

After all, you wouldn't wear your boating gear on a skiing holiday! You need the right gear for the right activity that will protect you in any conditions.

For the golfer in your life UV clothing would be perfect. At the driving range or playing 9 holes, there is often no shade. UV polos and khakis would make a huge difference.

Avid hikers, runners and gardeners alike could also benefit from UV gear. Each of these activities puts us in the direct sun for long periods of time. Slapping on some of this UV running gear will help block UV rays and keep us cool.

Let's not forget about water and ice. Both have reflective properties, making double trouble for UV exposure. Not if you've got UV water gear!

Whether surfing, paddleboarding, swimming, or skiing there is UV protective clothing that can help keep your skin safe.

UV clothing gifts are perfect for our current conditions. More people are getting outside and the right UV apparel can help them do it safely, and with style.

Who Should Wear long sleeved UV Clothing?

There is no question that athletes or outdoorsy people can benefit from investing in UV protective clothing. But the benefits extend to other populations as well.

Young children are often sensitive to the sun's UV rays. Protecting them early on can help them avoid health hardships in the future.

People with pale skin tend to be very sensitive to the sun. Or there may be those taking medication that increases sensitivity. UV clothing may help them more safely participate in outdoor activities.

Anyone who travels would also be well advised to keep some UV protective gear on hand. The quick-dry, light-weight material makes it great for any environment. And it won't take up tons of space.

Geography plays a role in sun exposure too. People living close to the equator or in high elevations may be exposed to stronger UV rays. Keeping some UV protective clothing on hand can help minimize overexposure risks.

UV Clothing as Part of a Sun-Care Plan

It's important to note that UV clothing should be part of a well-rounded sun safe plan. UV clothes alone will not protect you entirely, but they can add an extra layer of UV protection.

If you'll be spending a long duration outdoors it's still a good idea to apply sunscreen and take breaks in the shade if possible. Even if it's overcast the UV rays can still damage our skin. So don't skimp on protection if the suns not out.

Wearing your UV clothing, protective glasses, and sunscreen should keep your skin and eyes safe and healthy. Make sure to also stay hydrated and limit your exposure to the sun during the peak hours between 9 A.M. and 3 P.M.
